November is here.  Thanksgiving is around the corner and the holidays will soon be upon us.  Here are the best kid friendly San Francisco events happening this November 2017.

All Month Long: Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square

This popular rink is celebrated its 10th anniversary. The season kicks off Wed., Nov. 1 at 9:30am with an opening day ceremony followed by an all-day birthday celebration on Fri., Nov. 3, when skating is FREE. Flashback Friday is Nov. 10. Any person with a birthday between Nov. 3 and Jan. 15 with proof of ID will be given FREE admission and skate rental for their birthday.

All Month Long: Holiday Ice Rink at Justin Herman Plaza

Celebrating 31 years of holiday spirit, this rink bills itself as the largest outdoor rink in the Bay Area. Sun.-Thurs: 10am-9:30pm. Fri.-Sat.: 10am-11:30pm. Sessions begin on every even hour beginning at 10am and last 90 minutes.

November 1-5: Skis and Snowboard Festival

Free general admission to SnowBomb Ski and Board Festival 2017.  ENTERTAINMENT: Bounce House for Kids, Pro Athletes, BMX/Skate Ramp Show & Live Music. Get a chance to win lift tickets, season pass and prizes when you play at most ski resorts’ game booths. November 4, 10AM: Presidio Family Friendly Bike Ride

Join a park ranger for a gentle 4-mile ride and enjoy the history and nature of the Presidio. Rent a bike or bring your own. For age 8 and up.

November 4, 11AM and 2PM: SF Symphony Day of the Dead Celebration

Join us as at Davies Symphony Hall for the 10th anniversary of our Day of the Dead celebration, featuring two vibrant, fun-filled events. Mexican cultural icon Eugenia León lends her exquisite vocals to the San Francisco Symphony for a family-friendly afternoon concert, conducted by Alondra de la Parra. At the evening performance, León performs an intimate set backed by her own band. Arrive early for refreshments, live music, dancing, colorful altars, and folk art! November 4/5, 11/12, 18/19, 25/26: Creative Family Fun in the Presidio

Nov 4/5: There are over 200 species of birds within the Presidio! Come celebrate wour winter birds by joining us in the Officers Club as we make yarn birds. You can also join a bird walk on the morning of November 5th to learn about birding and conversation in The Presidio! Nov 11/12: For over 150 years, American soldiers have called the Presidio home. On this Veteran’s Day weekend Creative Family Fun with be making “Star Spangled Banners” of our own! Nov 18/19: Get creative with Classical columns! Sculpt a column based on the Presidio’s Palace of Fine Arts or design your own.

November 11, 11AM: Discovery Day at ATT Park

The ballpark is transformed into a science wonderland. With more than 150 hands-on exhibits, get ready to unleash your inner scientist. The park will be packed with science content including on the field, every entrance/exit and every level.

November 11, 5:30PM: Oceans A Glow: Family Night Hike and Campfire

Discover one of the most amazing natural phenomena: bioluminescence. Hike to Rodeo Beach and search for twinkling plankton. Learn where they come from and why they are blinking.

November 11 (Rescheduled from Last Month!!): Leap Sandcastle Classic

One of our personal favorite events of October.  The largest sandcastle competition in Northern California is not only fun for the family and a great excuse to get the community together out on the beach; it also raises money for a fantastic organization, Leap, that brings hands-on learning experiences to over 6,000 students across the Bay Area. Head on over to Ocean Beach between 11am and 4pm to witness some dazzling sand creations!

November 12, 2PM-6PM: GISSV San Francisco Lantern Festival

The annual GISSV San Francisco Lantern Festival is a fun family event including crafts, lantern making, German food & drinks and a lantern parade through the Presidio.

November 18, 11AM: Family Matinee with Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir

Tillery takes the audience on a journey through the songs of the ancestors while reminding everyone to stay hip while they get down.

November 18/19 & 24-26: Great Dickens Christmas Fair

Take a holiday adventure into Victorian London and marvel at hundreds of costumed characters in music halls, pubs and more. Dozens of lamp-lit shots will be stocked with Christmas gifts. Enjoy roasted chestnuts and hearty meals. Kids can enjoy puppet shows, Victorian fairies, interactive theatrical performances and, of course, Father Christmas.

November 19: Pier 29 Tree Lighting Ceremony

Join special friends from the Disneyland Resort. Sing songs with favorite characters, enjoy holiday magic and watch a 60-foot tree light up against the stunning city skyline. Check website for time.

November 22, 11AM: Westin St. Francis Sugar Castles

Executive Pastry Chef Jean-Francois Houdre will unveil two one-of-a-kind handcrafted sugar castles in the Landmark Lobby, featuring grand towers, rooms with illuminated windows, gift boxes, gingerbread trees and more.

November 22-January 7: ‘Tis the Season for Science at California Academy

Catch falling snow flurries inside the museum, enjoy festive live performances and glide around a new holiday ice rink with friends and family in the East Garden. There will also be a Snowman Theater, life-size models of polar bears and Antarctic penguins.

November 24, 4PM: Ghirardelli Square Tree Lighting

This event includes kids’ activities like face painting, henna and caricatures. There will also be live music, snow, Santa and more.

November 24, 6PM: Macy’s Union Square Tree Lighting

This beautiful and reusable tree will be decorated with more than 33,000 twinkling energy-efficient LED lights and 1,100 shining ornaments.

November 25-December 26: Giant Gingerbread House at the Fairmont

Starting on November 25, 2017, the hotel transforms into one of the world’s most beloved holiday destinations, where moments are turned into cherished memories. Fairmont San Francisco’s two-story, life-sized Gingerbread House in the hotel’s grand lobby has become a must-see attraction for guests from near and far.  Fairmont San Francisco’s talented culinary and engineering teams have joined forces to meticulously plan construction of this year’s enormous Gingerbread House, which will be even larger than last year’s stunning, two-story-high Victorian! Once complete, the impressive, edible abode will stand more than 25 feet high, 35 feet wide and 10 feet deep and will feature more than 10,250 homemade gingerbread bricks, 1,650 pounds of candy and 3,300 pounds of royal icing. The gingerbread house’s railroad track also delights guests of all ages, who happily gaze upon this favorite feature.

November 25, 1PM: Drop In Art at the Randall Museum

Celebrate the changing seasons by making a unique Borax snowflake. For age 3 and up.  Children under 8 must be accompanied by a paying, participating adult.

November 25-December 11: ODC The Velveteen Rabbit

Known for their athleticism and passion, these dancers present this story about the enduring power of love.

November 28-30: SF Symphony Youth Concerts

Youth Concerts: Music of San Francisco, Music of the World! is part of Concerts for Kids, a series of concerts for school-aged children designed as educational tools to develop students’ understanding and appreciation of symphonic music. These engaging performances introduce students to musical concepts and ideas through a unifying theme, lending themselves to interdisciplinary exploration and integration with core classroom curriculum.
